Techies-Tech-Tip: Don’t run a laptop on a soft surface

Using your laptop on your lap could shorten your devices life. Sounds odd but sitting with your laptop on your lap can block your devices air vent system. Blocking your laptop’s air vents on your lap traps heat inside the machine, which can overheat and damage internal components over time.

Why vents must stay clear

  • Laptops rely on clear vents to pull in cool air and push out hot air; when vents are covered by your legs, clothing, or a cushion, hot air cannot escape and temperatures rise quickly.

  • Overheating forces the processor to slow down (thermal throttling), can cause sudden shutdowns, and repeated high temperatures can shorten the lifespan of parts like the CPU, GPU, battery, and motherboard.

  • In extreme cases, a very hot laptop on soft, flammable surfaces (like bedding) can create a burn or fire risk, which is why safety guidance stresses using laptops on hard, flat, well‑ventilated surfaces.

Using a laptop stand or hard tray on your lap lets you work comfortably while keeping the vents unobstructed and the device cooler.
