What is cloud computing and is it safe?

Cloud computing (or simply the cloud) is the use of internet-based services to store, manage, and access data or software instead of keeping everything on your own device.

In simple terms, it allows you to save files, run applications, and access information online from anywhere with an internet connection.

For example, services like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive let you store documents in the cloud so you can open them on different devices. This also helps with saving photos online instead of only on your phone, so you can still access them if your device is lost or replaced.

Is cloud computing safe?

Cloud computing can be very safe, but its security depends on how the service is managed and how you use it. With security measures such as encryption, firewalls, and regular backups to help protect your data. In many cases, cloud storage can be safer than keeping files only on your own device, because your data is protected even if your device is lost or damaged.

However, there are still risks, such as weak passwords, phishing scams, or unauthorised access if an account is not properly secured.

For example, using strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) can make cloud accounts much safer by adding extra protection.
